I didn't see Bob on T.V. when he received the Grammy.but I did see him on the Lettermen Show promoting "World Gone Wrong".I believe it was the first time I had ever seen him on television. He looked a whole lot like I felt at the time, bad.Kind of like a stray dog lost in a dark alley.I just couldn't help but feel total compassion for the man.I don't know what it is about Bob,but it's like folks forget he's human, none of us are flawless, expectations of any kind, will just about always carry a price.

I thought you might find this commentary from a Rabbi last year interesting. The core of Dylan's quote was from the German Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch based in Psalm 27.

Best

Paul

In the meantime, here is my favorite Bob Dylan story. On February 20, 1991, Bob Dylan was given a Grammy award for lifetime achievement:

Dylan took his trophy from a beaming Jack Nicholson; he squinted, as if looking for his mother, who was in the audience.

"Well, my daddy, he didn't leave me much, you know he was a very simple man, but what he did tell me was this, he did say, son, he said” - there was a long pause, nervous laughter from the crowd - "you know it's possible to become so defiled in this world that your own father and mother will abandon you and if that happens, God will always believe in your ability to mend your ways."
Dylan's remarks were almost a verbatim account of the commentary of Rabbi Shimshon Rafael Hirsch: "Even if I were so depraved that my own mother and father would abandon me to my own devices, God would still gather me up and believe in my ability to mend my ways." (Taken from Ronnie Shcrieber’s website.)
Rav Hirsch was a brilliant rabbi in Germany in the 19th century. His comments (which inspired Dylan) were written for the words of psalm 27 which we recite every day in the month of Elul leading up to Rosh Hashanah, “ki avi ve-imi yaazavuni, va-hashem ya-asfeni, for though my father and mother forsake me, God will gather me in.”

You're right, the performance was a disaster. I kept wondering if there was something wrong with my TV. But the speech was perfectly amazing - the wierdest awards acceptance speech ever, but the only one that has ever given me pause for contemplation, and lo, these many years later, I still think about what Dylan had to say. No ugliness or failure there, just Dylan, enigmatic, but vulnerable.

I didn't see that, since it happened well before my late 90s Dylan fandom. Did I tell you about seeing him in concert a few years ago? Egads... it's pretty bad when someone is performing a song you have known all the words to for most of your life and it takes half the song before you recognize it. Thankfully Willie Nelson was there to cheer me up.
