miscellenous November stuff

HAPPY

THANKSGIVING!!!!

We had a very nice weekend at Monica & Pramod’s in Indianapolis. Bryan knows Monica from his undergrad days. We drove down on Saturday morning. When we got there, we all sat and talked for a bit then went for a long walk down a path close to their house. We also saw a little neighborhood “downtown” that’s really close to their house. If we’d stayed longer, I would have liked to go to the little shops that were there. We went out to the Cheesecake Factory for dinner. Then came back to their house and talked for a while longer before going to bed.

Sunday, we got up and had bagels for breakfast. We looked at their photos from their trip to India in January. Pramod is from there and it was Monica’s first trip to meet her in-laws. We had some Indian food for lunch and then headed home. It was really nice to just talk and get to know Monica and Pramod.

So now I’ve met two of Bryan’s friends. I know I have a lot more to meet.

We’re starting to think about where we want to go on our honeymoon. We started out thinking about Victoria, British Columbia until I started pricing things. Then I realized that we could go to England or Ireland for about the same price, if not cheaper than Victoria. Then Bryan mentioned he wants to go to Iceland, so I started researching that and it looks beautiful, so it’s been added to our list of places to go. We’ll have to seriously start looking and pricing things after the first of the year. I’ll definitely keep you up to date on our plans.

We haven’t been up to a whole lot in the last several weeks. We tried to take Bryan’s nephew Michael out Trick-or-Treating and we weren’t very successful. We got to the first house and he wasn’t in the mood to Trick-or-Treat. I think he wanted to go out with his dad, who got home later in the evening.

We went to see Kristin Hersh at the Old Town School of Folk Music on November 15.

Need to go, Bryan is leading a book group tonight on the book we just finished, The Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse by Louise Erdrich. It was good. It was a bit slow and about 100 pages into it I was sure that I was going to have to miss the book group. But once I sat down, really read it and got into it, I read the last 255 pages in a week. Since Bryan’s next book group isn’t for a while, I’m going to read a chick-lit book - The Pursuit of Alice Thrift by Elinor Lipman.

Karla’s sweater

Karla’s sweater is nearly finished! I had her do a preliminary try on about two months ago and the sleeves need to be about two inches longer. Monday night, I cut the ribbing off of one sleeve and knit about an inch of ribbing, I have two more inches to go. I hope it looks okay with three inches of ribbing at the bottom of each sleeve. Once I finish extending the sleeves, I will put the whole thing together. I have a lot of sewing pieces together on the Karla sweater and also the Lang cardigan.

waning knitting?

I finished the top of the second sleeve on the Lang cardigan. So now I just need to block it and sew it to the sweater. Then the neck and button bands need to be done on the sweater. Hopefully, I’ll finish it before winter is over. :)

I am beginning to wonder if my interest in knitting is waning or that it’s just the time that I am devoting to other things. I wonder if this is common, a knitting girl moves in with her boyfriend/fiance/husband and she almost stops knitting. I don’t sit on the couch for hours on end like I used to watching tv. We don’t have cable, so that’s part of it but I don’t want to sit on the couch for hours on end anymore. I feel like I have other things that I want to be doing. My excitement for knitting isn’t as strong as it was for a while. Maybe it’s because I’m not immersed in it every week at knit night or teaching every week. It’s been since I had my thumb surgery that my wanting to knit all the time has waned. I thought going to Stitches would revive me but it did for a bit. I think Bryan and I are still in a period of adjustment and from now until after the wedding, my wanting to knit a lot may be less than it was before. I also think that as we become more settled and it gets colder outside, I’ll want to sit down and knit.

the making of cards

I haven’t knit in a while. I’ve been too into card-making lately. I think I made all of the Halloween cards that I could want to. I’ve been working on our wedding save-the-date cards and magnets too. I think maybe the knitting will be picked up again as the weather gets cold. I just don’t sit in front of the tv like I used to, so the knitting time is less. I also have things to do around our apartment, things that seem to need to be done when you’re living with someone else.

My workshop at the guild was not a good workshop. I probably won’t be teaching anything for them again.

I’m going to be teaching a beginning class at the Fremont Public Library in Mundelein, IL. It’s going to be a two-hour learn-to-knit scarf class. Then a few weeks later will be a knitting-a-hat class. I’m looking for other knitting teaching opportunities that are outside of a store, since the stores in the suburbs are full of teachers. I can’t drive all the way to the city to teach because the commute into the city from the suburbs seems to get worse everyday. I’m also looking for places where I can have a schedule that I set, if I want to teach an 8-week beginning class where the students will learn a sweater then I’ll be able to do that. We’ll see how it goes.
