Um, we have a big problem

Lately, I’ve been trying to stay away from the political stuff as much as possible. It causes me too much stress and seems to make my jaw soreness worse from clenching my teeth (don’t worry, I have a night guard to help the TMJ situation).

Today, I feel is a day that I need to be a bit political. I was very sad to hear that Sandra Day O’Connor has resigned from the Supreme Court. Yes, she was a moderate conservative, but she was the one swing vote that could be counted on when it came to women’s health issues. With the current political climate we’re dealing with in the U.S. (or at least trying to deal with), we can only expect that the Shrub, our president, will try to find the most conservative, anti-women’s health, anti-diversity, pro-business male he can find. I say “male” because if he puts a woman on the bench, some people may say that her hormones may cause her to vote in a way that will anger the White House and we wouldn’t want that to happen, would we? We can’t have emotions or even logic play any role in making a decision. I’m sure many people are glad to see her go, but the prospects are looking grim. Hopefully, there will be a fight for any nominee that is too far to the right. Even if you don’t agree with her stand on the abortion issue, there were other decisions that she made regarding women’s rights that were beneficial to women’s standing in this country. Just her nomination paved the way for other women to be nominated and to serve on the Supreme Court.

I understand her wanting to spend time with her husband, who has Alzheimer’s, but couldn’t she have waited until the Shrubs had been cleared from the White House.

After the Shrub’s reelection, I was concerned about this. But I guess this is the time that we need to fight for some sanity in this country. I find it so disturbing that religious extremists who claim they have “God” on their side are waging a war against an enemy of religious extremists, who claim that they have “God” on their side who are waging this war.

Go to the NARAL site to send your senators a letter to stop Bush’s radical right nominees.
