knitting doesn’t help

Aunt Nan, Grandpa, Mom
Aunt Nan, Grandpa (Gpa), my mom
(May 2004)

The cool rainy days of October have been passing by the last two weeks without notice. All of a sudden the leaves are turning and I’ve been thinking where have I been that I’ve missed this last two weeks. As the leaves fall and the earth prepares itself for a long winter, so too have our feelings for two family members we’ve lost in the last two weeks. My aunt died on October 12 after a four-year battle with cancer. She passed on peacefully with my mother by her side. We all traveled to Kansas City for the memorial services. The Birds of Paradise in one of the flower arrangements seemed so fitting for a woman who traveled all over the world, visiting more than 30 countries in 30 years, and loved visiting the most exotic and out of the way places.

My grandfather, who had also been battling cancer for a few months, also passed away just six days after his younger daughter. We truly believe that he waited to know that his daughter had passed on safely and that it was his time to go. Bryan, my mom and I were with him until the end. It’s truly been a time of reflection and wonderful memories. As Bryan and I went through photos at my grandfather’s house, memories of being a kid living in western Kansas came flooding back — dance recitals and performances that my sister gave in my grandparents’ living room, most of which are captured on video tape, memories of riding our bikes up and down the street with our neighbor friend and the joys of visiting the local library. My grandfather so loved the local library that when I visited this past summer, he made sure that we visited the library. It was a real treat and we know the library staff will miss him too.

We lost two wonderful people in our family but the heavens have gained two beautiful souls who are traveling extensively in first class. My aunt is traveling to every country she couldn’t physically visit while she was alive and my grandfather is zooming around in his heavenly Airstream to far off places.

Wee Free Pink Socks

Autumn leaves on the sidewalk
Wow, two posts in less than a week. There much be something in the air.

I think I’ve found a happy medium lately with school reading and knitting. For my Children’s Lit class this week, we have two decent-sized books to read, Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchett and The BFG by Roald Dahl. On top of all of my other reading, I wasn’t sure I was going to get it all done. Several people mentioned last week that they listened to the books on disc. What a brilliant idea, why didn’t I think of that? So this weekend, I’ve been listening to Wee Free Men and knitting. During the first disc, I finished the Rowan Demin baby item, which has been washed and just needs buttons. (I’ll have a photo when it’s been received by mother and baby.) During the second, third, fourth and fifth discs, I’ve been knitting on a lovely new pair of socks. Ever since I first saw the Waving Lace Socks (Interweave Knits, Spring 2004) I’ve wanted to make them. Saturday, I decided that now is the perfect time to make them and I have plenty of sock yarn in my stash. I’m using Bonkers sock yarn, which I purchased at TKGA 2002.

Waving Lace Socks All of this listening has been very productive and already I’m working the heel on the first sock. I love the rhythm in this lace pattern. In the description of the sock in Interweave, it says “…Evelyn Clark finds [this sock] particularly soothing to knit.” I have to agree. Who knows, I may have a sock finished before the end of October without any problems.

These definitely weren’t started in October but Socktoberfest inspired me to sew up the toe last night. They’ve been sitting in my basket for about three weeks just needing kitchener stitching for the toe. Now on to another pair of socks for Socktoberfest.

I’m going to settle on this blog template for now since it is fall. When I have more time, I’ll put one together that I really like. Don’t be surprised if the template changes regularly just because I can’t make up my mind.

It’s been a rough week or so. My aunt is not doing well but we were able to travel to Kansas to see her this past weekend. It’s very hard saying goodbye.

**I just noticed my sidebar isn’t working. I’ll get it fixed later today. –Saturday, October 6

completely screwed up

I went in to upgrade WordPress today and somehow wiped out all of the previous formatting for the blog. The sick feeling in my stomach hasn’t gone away yet because I know that it was hours and months of time to get it just the way I liked it. I just wanted to add one thing on it and it would have been exactly what I wanted. Now I’m going to have to set it all up again. Argh! Maybe it’s a sign that it’s time for a new theme. This new theme is temporary until I can figure out one that I really like.
