socktobery sockness

Waving Lace Socks
I’m proud to say that for the first time in the four years I’ve participated in Socktoberfest this is the first time that I’ve actually started and finished a sock in October. ** I stand corrected, in 2006 I actually knit an entire pair of socks in the month of October.** To be completely honest only one of the socks in this pair was knit this year. The first sock of the pair was started and completed last year but then I experienced some serious second sock syndrome and another pair of socks looked much more appealing.

I finished the second sock in a record twelve days (a record for me) and I didn’t even have to take them everywhere with me. Granted I was home sick a few days last week but I was really impressed how quickly the seemed to knit up. It’s made me excited to make myself another pair of socks. The next pair will be two at a time because I can’t deal with year long gaps between socks.

There are books that have been made but photos haven’t been taken. They will be posted soon.
Bryan's first bound book
Bryan’s so excited about my making books, he’s coming up with a lot of his own ideas with incorporating his collages and poetry into little handmade books. I taught him how to sew his first binding on Monday night. We glued the spine and the next step is making the cover.

books I’ve made

Books I’ve made lately. I learned how to bind my first book using the pamphlet stitch about three weeks ago. Book for Bryan - cover
Immediately I decided I had to make a book for Bryan for our anniversary.
Book for Bryan - inside cover
This was my first book I ever bound with multiple signatures. It’s a collection of his poems and collages in one book.

He knew I was up to something because I was on the computer and making purchases at an art store. When I gave it to him, he was quite surprised.
Book for Bryan

After finishing Bryan’s book, I immediately wanted to make another book.
Daily journal
When we were in Kansas cleaning out my grandfather’s house in May, we came across several daily diaries my great-grandmother had kept for several years.
Daily journal - inside cover
One of the entries really touched me, it said something to the effect of “John called. Jane had baby girl. Mom and baby are fine.” That baby was me and I decided this year I wanted to keep a daily journal, just to record my last year of school.
Daily journal - spine
My attempts at keeping a daily journal before failed but with the perfect book, I knew this time would be different. I figured our anniversary was the perfect time to start.
Daily journal
I knew I wouldn’t find a journal I liked and I decided to make one for myself.

In early September in my Book Arts class, the first book we learned to make was an alphabet book.

Each member of the class made one and we each stamped two letters in the book.

I had “A” and “J”. I love this book, it’s such a special little book.
The button I used for the cover is one I’ve had for about seven or eight years and I’ve never used it. This seemed like the perfect project for it.

This weekend I’m taking an all-day bookbinding class. We’ll be binding three different types of books.
